Mister SF in Time Magazine
When the Battelle Human Affairs Research Centers in Seattle released a study that supposedly found that only one percent of men are gay, not ten percent as remains the conventional wisdom, Hank Donat was asked to comment for Time magazine. The article cast gays as on the defensive but also included a sidebar on how statistics may be used deliberately to mislead, raise money, or advance an agenda. In "The Shrinking Ten Percent," Time reported: "That 10% has remained a political talisman for the gay community was clear last week when several leaders refused to give it up... 'I'm not a mathematician,' says editor Hank Donat, 'but by their reasoning there are about 2.5 million gay men in America. I guess we're all living in California.'"
