New Beginning for IOA/Coronet

Dateline: The Richmond, Geary Blvd. near Arguello, where workers are breaking ground many months after the April 23, 2007 groundbreaking ceremony for the Institute on Aging’s senior housing complex. The location, 3575 Geary Boulevard, is remembered as that of the 1949 Coronet theatre, which closed in 2005 and was later demolished. The former beloved landmark hosted the premier screenings of both Star Wars and Blade Runner during its storied life as one of the City’s top movie houses. This morning, heavy equipment was visible in the shadow of the historic San Francisco Columbarium, which turned 110 years old on April 18, 2008. Remnants of the crematory from the former Odd Fellows Cemetery had been visible on the lot following the Coronet demolition in 2007.

Pieces of the past: Remnants of the crematory (above) were visible in this June, 2008 photo before disappearing once more under the construction project (below).
