Mister SF’s Roadshow: Prisoner of Melbourne

Colette Mann is Doreen Burns, the first moppet of Wentworth and one of the lead roles for the first 300 episodes – along with cellmates and fellow laundry workers Bea Smith and Lizzie Birdsworth.

“What are we all doing here? Get a life!” Initially dopey, sensitive, easy to manipulate, and easily victimized, Doreen grows up before our eyes. She marries Kevin Burns on the grounds of Wentworth, has the guts to tell Bea she doesn’t want to give her a kidney, and chooses the right path after helping Bea during Bea’s escape in Sydney. Doreen is last seen in Episode 446.

Colette Mann is one of Australia’s most popular media personalities. Her cooking shows, magazine columns, radio and TV gigs, and stage roles have continued nonstop since Prisoner with the exception of a short period after her son broke his leg. The busy family turned this sobbatical into a book, of course. Recently, Mann received critical acclaim for her turn as Shirley in the stage version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

The character Doreen Burns was brilliant. Excellent actress. I bet she is not like Doreen in real life. Great to see some of the characters. I missed the reunion. Would love to see a repeat. Love to see prisoner cell Block H back on television. Great show.
