Prisoner of Melbourne: Franky Doyle
Mister SF’s Roadshow: Prisoner of Melbourne |
Carol Burns is Franky Doyle. One of Prisoner’s most remembered roles is also one of its three prominent lesbian characters. Though she appeared only in Episodes 1-20, the explosively violent, nasty, illiterate dyke Franky became an icon of the lesbian community after she was rejected by reading teacher Karen Travers and was later shot in the chest during a botched robbery committed while out on escape.
Burns’ turn as Franky is renowned by audiences and acting circles alike. The role is in stark contrast to Burns’ own elegant real-life personality.
Franky Doyle is an icon of troubled youth. The character is used as a reference by Australian social workers with the message: don’t let this happen to you.
Burns developed Franky’s voice and snicker after hearing two young boys on a train.
In 1980, Los Angeles dykes held a bikey wake for Franky when the character bit the dust during Prisoner’s original short-lived American run in syndication.
