San Francisco in Cinema: Monk

Jasper Place, off Filbert Street between Stockton Street and Grant Avenue.
Adrian Monk is the neurotic detective in the USA Network original series that premiered in July, 2002. As played by Tony Shalhaub, Monk is something more (or less) than your average mystery-solving mastermind. He's also deeply obsessive, compulsive, germ phobic, height phobic, and depressive. In the debut episode, Monk is chased by a hit man down Jasper Place in North Beach and escapes, even though he's compelled to count every post along the alley as he makes his escape. Some authentic City locations in the 2-hour debut also include North Beach and Telegraph Hill sidewalks, and usual suspects like the Bay Bridge and Transamerica Pyramid. Directed by Dean Parisot. Subsequent episodes include mostly ersatz City locales.
