San Francisco in Cinema: Petulia
George C. Scott is a divorced doctor who suddenly finds himself entangled with kooky, confused Julie Christie in 1968's Petulia, directed by Richard Lester. Brilliant cinematography, out-of-sequence storytelling, great performances, and several San Francisco locations make this an intriguing, memorable film. Appearances by local actors and performers, including both the Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company, add to the rich local flavor. A number of scenes include beautiful, artistically photographed moments in unexpected locations such as the distinctive supermarket at 1095 Hyde Street at California, and the view from 19th Avenue and Lincoln that appears along the south bound drive through Golden Gate Park.
