San Francisco in Cinema: Serial

Golden Gate Ferry
Aging square Martin Mull commutes by ferry to San Francisco from his Marin County home in Serial. Based on the 1976 book The Serial: A Year in the Life of Marin County by newspaper columnist Cyra McFadden, this 1980 comedy is Tales of the City for the famed county north of here. Stay mellow with director Bill Persky and an outrageous cast that includes Sally Kellerman, Nita Talbot, Tom Smothers, Peter Bonerz, Bill Macy, and Christopher Lee. All the trappings of the era are hilariously represented from organics, jacuzzis, swingers, and cults to waterbeds, communes, and a cat named Vonnegut. Worth the price of rental just to hear Tuesday Weld call Pamela Bellwood a c---. The Bellwood character responds by asking, "Still?"
