San Francisco in Cinema: Sister Act

St. Paul's Catholic Church
When Whoopie Goldberg does her nun routine, she does it here at St. Paul's Catholic Church. In the 1992 comedy Sister Act, directed by Emile Ardolino, Whoopie is Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Vegas nightclub performer who witnesses a murder then hides out here, disguised as a nun. Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, and Mary Wickes play the nuns who take a shine to Whoopie's "Sister Mary Clarence," especially after Mary Clarence breaths new life into the parish choir. Harvey Keitel also stars. A 1993 sequel directed by Bill Duke features hip hop star Lauryn Hill. In Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Sister Mary Clarence saves the parish by training its young people to win a choir competition.
