1. De Haro, Francisco (1792-1849). 1834. He was born in 1792 in Compostela, Mexico. He came to San Francisco in 1819. He was a sub-lieutenant in the Mexican infantry. He was married to Emiliana Sanchez (sister of Alcaldes Francisco and Jose Sanchez) and had twelve children. He died on 28 November 1849 in San Francisco. He was interred at Mission Dolores cemetery in San Francisco. 

2. Estudillo, Jose Joaquin (1800-1852). 1835. Born 5 May 1800 in Monterey, California. He was married to Juana Maria del Carmen Martinez (daughter of Alcalde Ignacio Martinez) and had ten children. He died in June 1852 in San Francisco. He was interred at Mission Dolores cemetery in San Francisco. 

3. Guerrero, Francisco (1811-1851). 1836. He was born in 1811 in Tepic, Mexico. He came to San Francisco in 1834. He was a ranchero and sub-prefect (1845). He was married to Josefa De Haro (daughter of Alcalde Francisco De Haro) and had five sons. He was murdered by blows to the head by Francis LeBras on 13 July 1851 near San Francisco. He was interred at Mission Dolores cemetery in San Francisco. 

4. Martinez, Ignacio (1774-1848). 1837. He was born in 1774 in Mexico City, Mexico. He was in California by 1822. He was a solider, commandante, legislator, and ranchero. He was married to Martina Arellanes and had at least seven children, six daughters and one son. He died in June 1848 in San Jose, California.

7. Noe, Jose de Jesus (1805-1862). 1842. He was born in 1805 in Mexico. He came to San Francisco in 1834. He was a ranchero and owned San Miguel Rancho (Twin Peaks and Sutro Heights). He was married to Guadalupe Gardano and had four children. He died 17 March 1862. He is interred at Mission Dolores cemetery in San Francisco. 

8. Sanchez, Francisco (1805-1862). 1843. He was born in 1805 in San Jose, California. He was a ranchero and a commandante. He married Maria Teodora Higuera and had ten children. His brother, Jose de la Cruz Sanchez, was also an Alcalde. He died from injuries after a fall from his horse in September 1862. He was interred at Mission Dolores in San Francisco. 

9. Hinckley, William Sturgis (1807-1846). 1844. He was born in 1807 in Hingham, Massachusetts. He settled permanently in San Francisco in 1830. He was a ship's master, trader, and partner with Nathan Spear and Jacob Leese. He was married twice; his second wife was Susana Martinez (daughter of Alcalde Ignacio Martinez). He died in June 1846. 

10. Padilla, Juan Nepomuceno (1824-?). 1845. He was born in 1824. He was a barber, saloonkeeper, and a lieutenant. 

11. Sanchez, Jose de la Cruz (1799-1878). 1845. He was born 8 November 1799 in Santa Clara, California. He was a ranchero. He was married to Josefa Ramona Eduarda Mercado y Sal and had eight children. He died in 1878.

AMERICAN ALCALDES (1846-1850) 

1. Bartlett, Washington Allon (1812-1871). July 1846 to Feb 1847. He was born 3 September 1812 in Maine. He came to San Francisco in August 1846. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was married and had at least one daughter. He died in 1871. 

2. Bryant, Edwin (1805-1869). 22 Feb 1847 to June 1847. He was born in 1805 in Massachusetts. He came to San Francisco the first time in 1846 and returned in 1849 until 1852. He was a journalist, writer, and a judge. He died on 16 December 1869 in Louisville, Kentucky. 

3. Hyde, George (1819-1890). June 1847 to April 1848. He was born 22 August 1819 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He arrived in San Francisco on August 10, 1846. He was an Alcalde in San Jose, lawyer, and real estate investor. He was married to Ellen McCoy and had six children. He died on 16 August 1890. 

4. Townsend, Dr. John (?-1850). April 1848 to Sep 1848. He came to San Francisco in 1845. He was the town physician and a real estate investor. He was married to the sister of Moses Schallenberger and had a son. He died of cholera in December 1850 in San Jose, California. 

5. Leavenworth, Dr. Thaddeus M. (1804-1893). Oct 1848 - Aug 1849. He was born in 1804 in Connecticut. He was a surgeon, minister, real estate investor and philanthropist. He was married. He died 30 January 1893 in Santa Rosa, California. 

6. Geary, John White (1819-1873). Aug 1849 to 1850. He was born on 20 December 1819 near Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. He came to San Francisco on 1 April 1849 and left in 1852. He as a school teacher, city postmaster, army general, and governor of Kansas and Pennsylvania. He died from a heart attack on 8 February 1873 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is interred at Harrisburg Cemetery, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 

MAYORS (1850-present) 

1. Geary, John White. 1 May 1850. See earlier entry. 

2. Brenham, Charles (1817-1875). 5 May 1851. He was born 6 November 1817 in Frankfort, Kentucky. He arrived from New Orleans in San Francisco on 18 August 1849. He was a steamer captain, ship owner and banker. He married the daughter of General John Adair and had five children. He died from apoplexy on 10 May 1875 in San Francisco. 

3. Harris, Dr. Stephen (1802-1879). 1 Jan 1852. He was born in 1802 in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was a dentist. He was married and had at least one daughter. He died on 27 April 1879 in Napa, California. 

4. Brenham, Charles. 10 Nov 1852. See earlier entry. 

5. Garrison, Cornelius (1809-1855). 3 Oct 1853. He was born on 1 March 1809 on a farm on the Hudson River near West Point, New York. He came to San Francisco in 1852 or 1853, and returned to New York in 1859. He was a commodore, cabin boy, shipbuilder, businessman, and philanthropist. He was married and had at least one son. He died of a heart stroke on 1 May 1885 in New York City. 

6. Webb, Stephen (1804-1879). 2 Oct 1854. He was born in 20 March 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. He came to San Francisco in 1853. He was a railroad treasurer, mayor of Salem (MA), state legislator, senator, and a lawyer. He died on 29 September 1879 in Salem, Massachusetts. 

7. Van Ness, James P. (1808-1872). 1 July 1855. He was born in 1808 at Burlington, Vermont. He came from New Orleans to California in 1850 and moved to San Luis Obispo in 1861. He was a lawyer and author of the ÒVan Ness Ordinance.Ó He died on 28 December 1872 in San Louis Obispo, California. 

8. Whelan, George J. 8 July 1856. He was a lawyer and was in San Francisco during the late 1850s. 

9. Burr, Ephraim (1809-1894). 15 Nov 1856. He was born in 7 March 1809 in Rhode Island. He came to San Francisco in 1849. He was a businessman, banker, and president of an insurance company. He was married and had at least one son. He died on 20 July 1894 in San Francisco. 

10. Teschemacher, Henry (1822-1904). 3 Oct 1859. He was born in 1822 at Boston, Massachusetts. He came to San Francisco in 1842. He was a city supervisor and real estate investor. He was married. He died 26 November 1904 in Territet, Switzerland. 

11. Coon, Henry (1822-1884). 1 Jul 1863. He was born on 30 September 1822 in Columbia County, New York. He was a physican, business owner, police judge, and state court judge. He died of a heart attack on 4 December 1884 in San Francisco. He is interred at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, California. 

12. McCoppin, Frank (1834-1897). 2 Dec 1867. He was born 4 July 1834 in Longford, Ireland. He came to San Francisco in 1858. He was a postmaster, city supervisor, state senator, and railroad superintendent. He was married to Elizabeth Van Ness (daughter of Mayor James P. Van Ness). He died of stomach cancer on 26 May 1897 in San Francisco. 

13. Selby, Thomas (1820-1875). 6 Dec 1869. He was born on 14 May 1820 in New York City. He came to San Francisco in August 1849. He was a businessman, merchant, and mine operator. He was twice; first to Jane Williams and had two children, and second to Henrietta Inez Robinson Reese and had six children. He died of pneumonia on 17 June 1875 in San Francisco. 

14. Alvord, William (1833-1904). 4 Dec 1871. He was born on 3 January 1833 at Albany, New York. He came to California in 1853 and San Francisco in 1857. He was a banker, businessman, park commissioner, and police commissioner (1878-1899). He was married twice, but had no children. He died of heart failure as a direct result of bronchial troubles on 21 December 1904 in San Francisco. 

15. Otis, James (1827-1875). 1 Dec 1873. He was born on 11 August 1826 in Boston, Massachusetts. He came to San Francisco in 1849. He was an importer/exporter, city supervisor, and a president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was married to the daughter of Captain F.W. Macondray and had five sons. He died of diphtheria, while still serving in office, on 30 October 1875 in San Francisco. 

16. Hewston, Dr. George (1826-1891). 4 Nov 1875. He was born 11 September 1826 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He came to San Francisco in 1860. He was a professor and city supervisor. He was married to Emlia and had four sons and one daughter. He died from BrightÕs disease of the kidneys on 4 September 1891 in San Francisco. 

17. Bryant, Andrew (1823-1888). 6 Dec 1875. He was born on 30 October 1823 in Ettingham, Carroll County, New Hampshire. He arrived in San Francisco in April 1850. He was a gold miner, deputy sheriff, city marshall, businessman, naval officer, insurance investment, and real estate investor. He was married twice: first to Hanora Connolly and had two children, and second to Grace Bacon and had at least one daughter. He drowned on 11 May 1888 in the San Francisco Bay. 

18. Kalloch, Dr. Isaac (1832-1887). 1 Dec 1879. He was born on 10 July 1832 in Rockland, Maine. He came to San Francisco in 1875. He was a pastor, railroad chief attorney, railroad superintendent. He was married and had two sons. He died of diabetes on 9 December 1887 in Whatcom, Washington. 

19. Blake, Maurice (1815-1897). 5 Dec 1881. He was born on 20 October 1815 in Otisville, Maine. He came to San Francisco in 1853. He was a port collector, lawyer, state legislator, and judge. He was never married. He died of heart stroke on 26 September 1897 in San Francisco. He was interred at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael, California. 

20. Bartlett, Washington (1824-1887). 8 Jan 1883. He was born on 29 February 1824 in Savannah, Georgia. He came from Charleston to SanFrancisco in November 1849. He was a journalist, newspaper owner (Journal of Commerce, Public Balance, Daily Evening News), a member of the Vigilance Committee, county clerk, lawyer, and a govarnor of California. He was married. He died on 12 September 1887 in Oakland, California. 

21. Pond, Edward (1833-1910). 3 Jan 1887. He was born on 7 December 1833 in Bellville, New York. He came to California in 1855. He was head of the wholesale house of Pond & Reynolds, and president of the San Francisco Savings Union. He died on 22 April 1910 in San Francisco. 

22. Sanderson, George (1824-1893). 5 Jan 1891. He was born in 1824 in Boston, Massachusetts. He came to California in 1849 and San Francisco in 1865. He was a partner with Root & Sanderson, and served two terms as president of the Board of Trade. He died of acute pneumonia on 1 February 1893. 

23. Ellert, Levi (1857-1901). 3 Jan 1893. He was born on 20 October 1857 in San Francisco. He was the proprietor of L.R. Ellert & Co., served two terms as a city supervisor, and was the president and general manager of the Sanitary Reduction Works. He died on 21 July 1901 in San Franicsco.. 

24. Sutro, Adolph (1830-1898). 7 Jan 1895. He was born on 29 April 1830 in Aachen, Prussia. He arrived in San Francisco on 21 November 1850. He owned at one time 1/12 of the City's acreage, a prominent private library, the Cliff House in the 1880s, built the Sutro Baths, and planted the Sutro Forest. He died on 8 August 1898 in San Francisco. 

25. Phelan, James (1861-1930). 4 Jan 1897. He was born on 20 April 1861 in San Francisco. He was a banker, custodian of the Relief and Red Cross Funds after the 1906 earthquake, and a U.S. senator. He died on 7 August 1930 at Montalvo, California. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California. 

26. Schmitz, Eugene (1864-1928). 8 January 1902. He was born on 22 August 1864 in San Francisco. He was a musician, orchestra conductor, and a city supervisor. He died on 20 November 1928 in San Francisco. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California. 

27. Boxton, Charles (1860-1927). 9 July 1907. He was born on 24 April 1860 in Shasta County. He was a dentist, California Volunteer, and city supervisor. He was appointed by his fellow supervisors, but resigned after a week in office. He died on 29 August 1927 in San Mateo, California. 

28. Taylor, Edward (1838-1923). 16 July 1907. He was born on 24 September 1838 in Springfield, Illinois. He arrived in California on 4 February 1862. He was a public library trustee, vice president of Cooper Medical College, president of the San Francisco Bar Association, dean of Hastings College of Law, and a noted poet. He died on 5 July 1923 in San Francisco. 

29. McCarthy, Patrick (1863-1933). 8 January 1910. He was born on 17 March 1863 in County Limerick, Ireland. He came to the United States in 1880 and San Francisco in 1886. He was president of the local and state trade councils. He died on 1 July 1933 in San Francisco.

30. Rolph, James Jr. (1869-1934). 8 January 1912. He was born on 23 August 1869 in San Francisco. He was a banker, shipbuilder, and a California governor (1931-1934). He died on 2 June 1934 in Santa Clara County, California. 

31. Rossi, Angelo (1878-1948). 7 January 1931. He was born on 22 January 1878 in Volcano, Amador County. He was president of a florist firm and a city supervisor. He died on 5 April 1948 in San Francisco. 

32. Lapham, Roger (1883-1966). 8 January 1944. He was born on 6 December 1883 in New York City. He was president of the American Hawaiian Steamship Co., a member of the National Defense Mediation Board in 1941, and headed government missions to China and Greece. He died on 16 April 1966. 

33. Robinson, Elmer (1894-1982). 8 January 1948. He was born on 3 October 1894 in San Francisco. He was a deputy district attorney, municipal court judge, superior court judge, and president and general manager of the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Colma. He was married at least twice; his second wife was Ora Norris Martin. He died on 7 June 1982 in Paradise, Butte County, California. 

34. Christopher, George (1907-2000). 8 January 1956. He was born on 8 December 1907 as George Christopheles in Arcadia, Greece. He came to San Francisco in 1909. He was an accountant, business executive, and partner of the Christopher Dairy. He was married to Tula Sarantitis. He died on 14 September 2000. 

35. Shelley, John (1905-1974). 8 January 1964. He was born on 3 September 1905 in San Francisco. He was a businessman, state senator, U.S. congressman, and a lobbyist. He died on 1 September 1974 in San Francisco. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California. 

36. Alioto, Joseph (1916-1998). 8 January 1968. He was born on 12 February 1916 in San Francisco. He was a lawyer, part of the anti-trust division in the Justice Department, president of the San Francisco Board of Education, and president of the Rice Growers Association. He was married twice, first to Angelina Genaro and then to Kathleen Sullivan. He died in San Francisco on 29 January 1998. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California. 

37. Moscone, George (1929-1978). 8 January 1976. He was born on 24 November 1929 in San Francisco. He was a city supervisor and a member of the state senate. He was shot to death by Dan White on 27 November 1978 at his office in City Hall, San Francisco. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California. 

38. Feinstein, Dianne (1933- ). 4 December 1976. She was born on 22 June 1933 in San Francisco, California. She was a president of the Board of Supervisors and a U.S. Senator. 

39. Agnos, Art (1938- ). 8 January 1988. He was born in 1938. He was a state legislator. He is married to Sherry Hankins and had two sons. 

40. Jordan, Francis (1935- ). 8 January 1992. He was born on 20 February 1935 in San Francisco. He was a police officer and Chief of Police. He has been married twice; with his first wife he had three sons.Ê His second wife was Wendy Paskin. 

41. Brown, William (1934- ). 8 January 1997. He was born on 20 March 1934, in Mineola, Texas. He was a janitor, shoe salesman, playground director, community activist and state legislator. He married Blanche Vitero. 

42. Newsom, Gavin (1967- ). 8 January 2004. He was born on 10 October 1967, in San Francisco. Along with financial partners, he owned and operated businesses including restaurants, an inn, a wine shop and a bar. He married attorney Kimberly Guilfoyle.
