In 2001 the Fairmont
Hotel completed an $85 million dollar renovation but closed its Crown
Room to the public, except for certain holidays like Thanksgiving and
New Year's Eve. Twenty-four stories atop the hotel's tower, the Crown Room
is accessible by a special direct elevator at the back of the Fairmont
lobby. The Crown Room is available for private parties but it's too bad
the sublime views from this special location above Nob Hill are no longer
regularly accessible to visitors and locals for whom the Top of the Mark
is just not high enough.
