No longer able
to turn a profit on $15 pancakes, chic Doidge's Cafe closed in the
summer of 2001 after thirty years in business. In a letter to the public,
owner David Coyle said the longtime institution was a favorite spot for
locals as well as out-of-town celebrities and indeed the ever tony joint
on Union Street at Fillmore was. Coyle cited a declining economy, increased
operating expenses and payroll taxes, a dearth of parking in the neighborhood,
and competition from chain stores all as reasons for closing the restaurant
which had recently expanded its operating schedule to include the dinner
hour. |
