Farewell Favorites: Enrico's

The Saloon, 1232 Grant Avenue, is SF's oldest bar.
If Caffe Trieste is the spirit of North Beach, the Saloon its liver, and City Lights its brain, then there's no question that Enrico's was the heart of Bohemian San Francisco. Founded in 1958 by Enrico Banducci, the renowned restaurant and jazz venue was shuttered from 1988 to 1992, but reopened under new management. In November, 2006 the redux-Enrico's slipped into history, too. An intersection for the obscure and the famous alike, Enrico's will be forever remembered by San Franciscans who cherished the onetime mecca for writers, artists, singers, musicians, poets and their followers. The final performer was local jazz favorite Levay Smith on October 30, 2006.
