 Gold Spike, 527 Columbus Avenue. The Mechetti family placed the Gold Spike sign and awning in storage in the event of any future opening in an alternate location. Mister SF took these photos the day Mr. Mechetti handed over his keys to the landlord after leaving the restaurant his family operated for almost 8 decades. |
With its perfect location in the vibrant center of North Beach, the Gold Spike was a haven for much local clutter, er color, that's it, for many decades. Big food and walls lined with business cards from patrons all over the world were hallmarks of the Gold Spike, which closed in February, 2006 following a dispute between owner Paul Mechetti and his landlord over retrofitting and repairs. Originally known as the Columbus Candy Store and Soda Fountain, the Gold Spike was founded by Mechetti's grandparents in 1920. Detail
