Farewell Favorites: Rice & Young
Steve Young announced his retirement from the 49ers in the spring of 2000, to the relief of many San Franciscans who were more concerned with Steve's oft cold cocked noggin than with winning games. Jerry Rice, who holds nearly every record a wide receiver can hold in the NFL, was expected to leave the team due to salary caps. These are the NFL equivalent of term limits. Rice announced on June 5, 2001 that he had joined the Oakland Raiders. A 49ers party without Rice and Young is like a 49ers party without guacamole. Incomplete.
