The Embarcadero
SkyDeck was an ambitious tourist attraction. Starting in September,
1996, a glass enclosed indoor-outdoor observation deck on the 41st
floor of Embarcadero One, Battery Street at Sacramento, was the only 360-degree
downtown overlook without a restaurant or bar. Visitors paid up to $6.50
for admission to the SkyDeck, which Embarcadero
Center management expected would draw 350,000 visitors per year. It
did not. Its location away from the major tourist districts, inconvenient
system of ticketing and entry, and competition from non-commercial overlooks
all doomed the SkyDeck, which was also available to rent for private parties.
The SkyDeck closed January 1, 2000.
