Farewell Favorites: UN Plaza Fountain
Farewell Unfavorite: On March 11, 2003, the City abandoned the fountain at United Nations Plaza after losing the battle to keep the collection of granite slabs and and water jets clean. Officials with the Department of Public Works put a fence around the fountain at Market Street near Seventh and Fulton. The plaza has long been a day room for the homeless. DPW workers said the simply couldn't keep ahead of the litter, needles, and human filth in and around the fountain. Plans are afoot to redesign the plaza and fountain, which was created by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin in the early 1970s.
