originally posted 8/28/08: Dateline: Upper Market, 2029 Market Street, where Mecca finally bites the dust. The over-rated eatery enjoyed a turn-of-the-century rise as a quasi-banquet hall for organized groups and gay community faithful. Mister SF visited last November and found the place empty, though there were lines spilling out onto the sidewalks at Home, the fish company, and other neighborhood restaurants. After we dined, the apparent exodus was understandable. A recent change in management proved one thing: nothing crushes laurels like bad service and bad food.
