Sunset for Mervyn’s in the Richmond (More)

by Mister SF on 10/17/2008

<< Back 10/17/08: Hayward-based Mervyn’s announced today that it will sell its inventory and close its 149 stores including one in San Francisco at Masonic Avenue and Geary Blvd. After 59 years, Mervyn’s, a mid-range retail chain, had become the proverbial ham in the sandwich between high-end retailers and discount stores. In addition to jobs and vitality lost to the neighborhood, it’s sad because this Mervyn’s was one of the few places in the City with plenty of parking. The shopping center also offers great views to spare, a Best Buy, Office Depot, and a Subway, among other relevant chain businesses.

Now Hiring, Now Not Hiring: The company was optimistic up to the end, even hiring and investing in its future.

Mervyn’s, 2675 Geary Blvd.

Huge parking lots and good neighbors couldn’t save Mervyn’s.

Proximity to the 43 Masonic and 38 Geary lines, among others, gives shoppers easy access to stores here.
