originally posted 1/27/09: Dateline: the Castro, 3489 16th Street, where shopping for Valentine’s Day takes on added poignancy after today’s announcement by Pennsylvania-based parent company Hershey that it plans to close both its Joseph Schmidt chocolate factory in the City and its Scharffen Berger plant in Berkeley by mid-year. The brands will still exist as Hershey imprints, but gone is this local angle on artisan chocolate.
