Prisoner of Melbourne: Karen Travers and Dr. Greg Miller
Mister SF’s Roadshow: Prisoner of Melbourne |
Peta Toppano is Karen Travers. The school teacher stabs her husband Wayne to death in the shower. Karen, a Catholic, accepts responsibility for the crime resolutely, until she comes to terms with guilt over an abortion that Wayne forced her into having. (The clinic doctor is played by 30th Anniversary attendee Will Deumer, who also played mob boss Lionel Fellowes.) We learn that Karen came home following the abortion and found Wayne in bed with another woman before killing the man. The circumstances of her crime garner Karen sympathy, study release, and ultimately parole.
Toppano is uniquely beautiful. It is no wonder that audiences fell for her. And, it’s no wonder that Franky Doyle fell for her, too.

Barry Quin is Greg Miller, the prison doctor. When Karen rekindled her desire for freedom, and reignited former flame Dr. Miller, Toppano and Quin were falling in love in real life. The couple was married for ten years beginning 1979.
Barry Quin as Dr. Miller. The young doctor tires of serving the pill parade and knocking back passes. He opens a practice in Fitzroy but leaves Melbourne with Karen after tragedy strikes.

Barry Quin is my godparents son. He moved to Australia when I was very young … I tend to remember he was the “star” of one of the original Twix adverts here in the UK before seeking a career in Australia soapland.
I followed his ventures for many years via my Australian penpal – Anne Dwyer (unfortunately lost contact) but by the time Prisoner found its way to the UK, I’d lost interest in my gorgeous “uncle”. Well, that was my claim to fame at the time and how I used to refer to him. Doubtless he never even knew that I really existed! Still, always kept in contact with his lovely lovely parents until they died, and his sister Diane – all hailing from West Sussex.
Wonder what he’s up to now.
