The Spotswood Pumping Station, 2 Booker Street, Spotswood, is Blackmoor Prison. Known as the Black Hole, Blackmoor exists as an axe over the womens’ head from Episode 439. Rita arrives at the Black Hole for three episodes beginning with 664 after the Freak again uses transfer as a means to remove a Top Dog.
Rita’s transfer creates a dramatic, violent mini-series away from Wentworth. All at once a new raft of heavies, mates, and Top Dog are fighting for survival against ruthless screws and each other. After Rita takes over the prison and burns the place down, several characters follow her home to the back of Channel 10.
Reception: Rita is forced to toe an imaginary line by sadistic Blackmoor officers.
The Pumping Station also appears in the Australia films Mad Max (1979) starring Mel Gibson and Prisoner star Sheila Florance.
Glenda Linscott, who played Rita Conners, is entertaining Prisoner fans in Birmingham, UK on Sept. 12, 2009.
How we got there: From Flinders Street Station take either the Werribee or Williamstown train to Spotswood Station. Exit the station heading north one half block on Hall Street. Turn right on Hudson’s Road, right on Booker to the ScienceWorks entrance. The walk is through an industrial area which adds to the Blackmoor experience. In order to view the grand tower entrance that created the imposing prison, you must walk all the way around the ScienceWorks complex which includes the landmark buildings. Walk all the way to the old highway, Douglas Parade. To access the courtyard, enter the ScienceWorks on Booker Street. Admission is $8 for adults.
