The Bay Model
is an amazing scale reproduction of San Francisco
Bay created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. More than 300 square
miles of bay, river, ocean and upland are represented in the model, which
is used by scientists to test the effects of drought and floods, as well
as human compromises to the bay such as dredging and development. A visit
to the huge model is truly eye opening. One frightening fact mentioned
early in an introductory video is that we've already filled in an entire
third of the bay since Northern California was settled more than 150 years
ago. The Bay Model Visitors Center is located in a two-acre building at
2100 Bridgeway in Sausalito. Call 415-332-3871 for more information. |
