IThe ground level
of Coit Tower features captivating murals by
25 artists in the style of social realism embodied by the work of Diego
Rivera. The murals, paid for with New Deal funds, depict scenes from the
Great Depression in Northern California. They were considered so controversial
during the City's labor strife in the 1930s that the opening of the tower
was delayed by City officials for several months.
