Surviving Earthquake
Cottages - small homes built following the 1906 Earthquake and Fire
- are as rare and treasured in San Francisco as earthquake
survivors themselves. The two homes pictured in this entry are located
in the middle of a well traveled neighborhood, where each day hundreds of
passersby may be unaware that just a few feet from the street lie architectural
symbols of the City's legendary resilience. The 1906 disaster left two-thirds
of San Franciscans homeless and destroyed downtown, but not the spirit of
San Francisco. Detail
