High on a Hill: Fort Point
Fort Point was built to protect the gate from hostile entry during the Civil War. Though it never saw much action - its cannons were never fired in battle - Fort Point remains an important historical and military landmark. The top of the fort offers a great view of the bay and an amazing vantage point from which to see the architecture of the Golden Gate Bridge. Located in the Presidio, Fort Point is a great place to play hide-and-seek with the kids. Make an afternoon of it by picnicking nearby at the beautifully restored Crissy Field.
