High on a Hill: Haight-Ashbury
Anyone who's still complaining that the hippy authenticity of the Haight-Ashbury is gone is reminded that the McDonald's franchise at Haight and Stanyan opened more than 25 years ago, and that Ben & Jerry have been firmly ensconced at the corner of Haight and Ashbury since the '80s. Still, head shops abound, as do funky boutiques, used record stores, bookstores, and more. An afternoon outing to the commercial strip is enhanced by a visit to the Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury Street, where the Dead were busted in 1967.
