Had Mister SF
been raised in the City, he might have spent his entire childhood playing
Planet of the Apes at Battery Godfrey. The
bluff top ruin sits high above the ocean on the west side of the Golden
Gate. The three gun battery served during World War I and part of World
War II before being taken out of service in 1943. Today it is an intersection
of the imagination, with awe inspiring views that are unique among San
Francisco overlooks. Anyone who thinks the dynamic natural environment
of the bay simply stops on the other side of the gate bridge is in for
a big surprise. Hikers can enter the coast trail through here. Access is
through a parking lot on Langdon Court, off Lincoln Boulevard in the Presidio.
Battery Godfrey is one of several artillery positions that once protected
the coast from invasion. Caution: cruisy.
