High on a Hill: Upper Fort Mason

Upper Fort Mason is graced by the beautiful Great Meadow. This rambling lawn is dotted only with a few trees, a curved walkway, Benny Bufano's Madonna, and a statue of Congressman Phil Burton. Burton's efforts created the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972. While the Great Meadow is its glory, Upper Fort Mason also features postcard views of the Golden Gate, Bay, and Marina, as well as some interesting architectural highlights. (Bay Street between Van Ness Avenue and Laguna)
