High on a Hill: Waldo Tunnel

Rainbow over the Marina, 12/17/02.
The Waldo Tunnel, on the Sausalito side of the Golden Gate Bridge, helps promote the sensation that when you leave the City you leave the other side of the rainbow. The tunnel is named for William Waldo, a big Whig who ran for Governor of California in 1853. He lost and went on to establish the town of Waldo, Oregon. The original tunnel was built in 1937, with the second bore added in 1954.
