The Financial District is a giant intersection of history, finance, art, and architecture. Winding a furious run through tunnels in the shadows of steel giants are banking, law, advertising, high tech, all capital industries and all their soldiers. Much of it is built on landfill for the busy San Franciscan who doesn't mind taking chances. After all, earthquakes only happen here every 83 years, right? The best free highlights include the redwood grove near Transamerica Pyramid, Lotta's Fountain, Hotaling Street, Leidesdorph Street, Justin Herman Plaza, Philip Johnson's 101 California building, the Banker's Heart, and the waterfront.
