Tan's ground-breaking fiction demonstrates the power of the mother-daughter
relationship to overcome adversity. The Oakland-born Asian-American achieved
acclaim with The Joy Luck Club in
1989. Her work includes the novels The Kitchen God's Wife (1991), The Hundred
Secret Senses (1995), and The Bonesetter's Daughter (2001), in addition
to essays, children's books, and screenplays. Her literature is characterized
by themes of generational dissonance and immigrant issues. As a pop culture
icon she has been a character on The Simpsons and is a member of the Rock
Bottom Remainders, a rock group whose members include Dave Barry, Tad Bartimus,
Roy Blount, Jr., Kathi Goldmark, Simpson's creator Matt Groening, Stephen
King, Barbara Kingsolver, Ridley Pearson, and Joel Selvin. Tan lives in
San Francisco and New York with her husband, Lou DeMattei. |
