In with the New! 690 Market Street

690 Market Street, artist's rendering.

Here is the picture of old and new. It was ciao WaMu and back to future at 690 Market Street beginning in 2003. The Old Chronicle Building is revealed behind the crust of an earlier Market Street modernization movement. Built in 1890, the building will live a new life as the Ritz-Carlton Club and Residences, 52 private residences and 49 member-owned time-share units. The original building was once the tower of San Francisco's skyline. The restored exterior will delight architectural preservationists, and all others, as surely no one will miss the outgoing eyesore. Its repurpose as luxury condos makes it a jewel in the crown of SF's new Manhattanized downtown living, but also earns the disdain of housing activists.
