New and Venerable Institutions: City CarShare
Early in the 2000s, a fleet of lime-green new VW bugs became a familiar sight on the streets of San Francisco. The bugs, as well as some wagons and sedans, serve more than 1,400 members (at this writing in May, 2002) of City CarShare. The nonprofit organization recognized the growing needs of a City where parking, maintenance, and insurance make owning a car a liability for many consumers. In 2004, a San Francisco CarShare member paid a deposit of $300, plus $10 per month, $2-4 per hour, and 44 cents per mile. Cars are available 24/7 and sharing is coordinated via the City CarShare web site.
