New and Venerable Institutions: Costco Roast Chicken

These birds were scooped up in seconds by waiting shoppers.
San Francisco has a thing for chicken. For many years, the fried chicken at Woolworth's lunch counter was a well-known gastronomic pleasure - and not a guilty one. In 2002, the freshly roasted chicken at the Costco warehouse store on 10th Street is all the rage. Crowds waiting for the chickens to come out of the oven can resemble the floor of the stock exchange. Even on a slow day, the warehouse store sells up to 600 of the savory birds. Fans say the Costco Roast Chicken is as tasty as any you could make at home and, with a price tag under $5, is the best deal around.
