New and Venerable Institutions: It's Tops
It's Tops Coffee Shop is the City's ultimate authentic '50s diner. With the exception of some expansion, the diner located at 1801 Market Street is almost perfectly preserved from the day it opened in the 1930s. Bruce and Sheila Chapman are the brother-and-sister team that operates the shop their parents bought in 1952. With great food and only about a dozen tables, there's often a line to get in here - especially on weekend mornings. It's Tops has become such an institution over the years that even Bill Griffith's cartoon character Zippy the Pinhead can't resist the urge to saddle up to the counter for some pancakes once in a while!
