New and Venerable Institutions: Wedstock

12/07/04: At Glide Memorial Church, Assemblyman Mark Leno (right) announces the "Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act," backed by supporters including the Revs. Penny Nixon and Cecil Williams and members of the gay civil rights organization Equity California.

Wedstock: As failed Democratic leader Senator Dianne Feinstein attempted to scapegoat gays following the reelection of President George W. Bush, SF Mayor Gavin Newsom and other local leaders were unrelenting in their support for gay marriage. On December 12, 2004, Assemblyman Mark Leno introduced legislation to guarantee gays and lesbians that right. The "Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act" affirms the civil rights of same-sex couples while recognizing the right of religious groups to practice without government control.
