New and Venerable Institutions: Wedstock

Wedstock: On the morning of August 12, 2004, the California Supreme Court invalidated the 4,000 marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples in San Francisco from February 11 - March 12. Supporters responded in a familiar fashion, with a rally at Castro and Market and a march to City Hall. The reversal was met with a range of emotions. Some were devastated; Supervisor Tom Ammiano later spoke of friends who cried on his shoulder after he addressed the rally. (I and others had a difficult time mustering outrage. Sure, it sucks to be degraded once more. But, as the constitutional challenge against denying gays the right to marry moves forward, Californians will not be able to look at Phyllis and Del and say that they are wrong. Everything in their faces tells me that history is on our side. This is not our last day in this struggle, but neither is it our first day. And so, we march down Market Street once more. - HD)
