Notorious SF: Marina Safeway

Detail, Mosaic mural by John Garth.
The Safeway at 15 Marina Blvd., an infamous pick up spot for at least three decades, opened in June, 1959. Its reputation is well documented in magazines, travel guides, and other media. In Tales of the City, a creep tries to pick up Maryann with the line, "Are these scallions or green onions?" Mister SF knows a guy who picked up a woman in the dairy isle here using, "Do you have time for coffee with a guy who makes crème brûlée?" If you can't score here, you can always go home and drown your sorrows in Häagen-Dazs. The mosaic mural on the building's east side depicts food sources and distribution from around the world and was created by San Francisco artist John Garth.
