The San Franciscans: Willie Brown
With his controversial character and flamboyant lifestyle, The Honorable Willie L. Brown, was the quintessential San Francisco mayor. Some said you either hate Mayor Brown or you love him. Others said you either hate him or haven't read the morning paper yet. Throughout his storied political career, the seasoned operator had a lot of ups and downs - mostly ups. The former Assembly president was re-elected mayor in 1999 by a sound margin only after Supervisor Tom Ammiano's surprise write-in campaign forced him into a run-off and galvanized communities that had been politically complacent for years. The 1999 campaign is a highlight in Chronicle reporter Rachel Gordon's definitive summary of Brown's reign as Willie Da Mayor.
