Hollywood comes to SF! The Castro Plays Itself Biopic
of slain gay leader Harvey Milk underway in SF neighborhood. The Castro Plays itself in Milk. 1978 Again: Enduring neighborhood icons, polished and shined for director Gus Van Zant. Seeing double once more. A facade of community bulletins hides space used for contemporary safe sex/anti drug billboards. Back to the Present: The flyers in "Milk" temporarily masked layers of time and these totems of issues that challenge gays decades after Milk's murder galvanized the gay rights movement and a social confrontation that had been simmering since the Stonewall riot in New York on June 28, 1969. |
