Mister SF defies anyone
who's seen Tales of the City to visit Macondray
Lane without entering the world of Armistead
Maupin's bewitching stories. Though it was made for PBS television,
this 1993 miniseries is as good as the best cinema. Follow the mysteries
of Anna Madrigal and her tenants on this hillside lane, renamed Barbary
in the series as it was in the books and newspaper column on which it was
based. Featuring incredible insights and locations truly all over town,
Tales of the City was directed by Allistair Jones and stars Laura Linney,
Chloe Webb, Olympia Dukakis, Donald Moffat, Bill Campbell, Nina Foch, Barbara
Garrick, and Thomas Gibson. All are perfect in their roles as San Franciscans.
Karen Black, Mary Kay Place, Edie Adams and Parker Posie also appear. Subsequent
books in the series, More Tales of the City
and Further Tales of the City, were also filmed.
