International Settlement
500 Block of Pacific Avenue
between Montgomery and Kearny Streets.
What a difference five decades
makes. In 2003, rusted sign posts were remnants of what was a once a gateway
to the International Settlement. The red light district where North Beach
meets the Barbary Coast was named for its dense immigrant population.
The strip of dance halls, brothels, and gin joints - Moulin Rouge, The
Hippodrome, Diana's, Pago Pago, and McKale's among them - catered to sailors
on shore leave.
