Settlement What a difference five decades makes. In 2003, rusted sign posts were remnants of what was a once a gateway to the International Settlement. The red light district where North Beach meets the Barbary Coast was named for its dense immigrant population. The strip of dance halls, brothels, and gin joints - Moulin Rouge, The Hippodrome, Diana's, Pago Pago, and McKale's among them - catered to sailors on shore leave. Detail
