The San Franciscans: Chuck Williams
Chuck Williams is the founder and vice chairman of the Williams-Sonoma specialty retail empire that includes Pottery Barn, Hold Everything, and the flagship Williams-Sonoma cookware stores. Chuck opened his first Williams-Sonoma store in Northern California in 1956. After significant expansion in the retail market, he introduced the Williams-Sonoma catalog. In doing so, Chuck became the first retailer to mainstream professional cooking equipment in the U.S. Showing few signs of slowing down, Chuck has overseen Williams-Sonoma's successful cookbook series in addition to the company's development of an elegant new headquarters on Van Ness Avenue in the 1990s. Anyone there will tell you it is Chuck's energy and his penchant for quality that sets the bar for Williams-Sonoma. Makes you wonder how he found time to remodel his perfectly charming Nob Hill cottage. If you knew Chuck, you wouldn't wonder at all.
